RDM Consultation: Requirements from Research Funders

Research funding institutions, such as the German Research Foundation (DFG) or the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), expect verifiable statements about the research data handling in funding applications. Therefore, when applying for funding for your research project, you schould adhere to data management guidelines and principles set by the funding institution.

Examples

German Research Foundation (DFG)

  • Project Planning and submission of proposal: Concepts and considerations for quality assurance should be outlined in the proposal. This includes considerations about data types, discipline-specific standards, third-party rights and the choice of suitable repositories.
  • Accessibility: Data should be made available in accordance with the FAIR principles and as promptly as possible.
  • Long-Term archiving: Data should be archived for at least 10 years.

Horizon 2020 (European Union)

  • Research data should be FAIR. In cases of reasonable grounds, an opt-out option exists.
  • A Data Management Plan (DMP) should be developed for all projects in the Open Research Data (ORD) pilot program within the first six months of the project and should be updated on an ongoing basis.
  • At the time of application submission, the information should be provided regarding the nature of the data, where they will be stored, and how they will be made accessible.
  • The principle “As open as possible, as closed as necessary” applies. Data do not necessarily have to be publicly accessible, if for example, the data have commercial value or need to be withheld for security or privacy reasons.

Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF)

  • A research data management plan is required depending on a funding program. Specific requirements vary depending on a respective tender.
  • After the completion of the project, the data should be made available to an institution or repository in a format that can be shared. The specific requirements of the funding guidelines must be taken into account.
